Comfort in the Winter

#Attention! Days are becoming shorter and the weather is chilly- winter is just around the corner! Take the time to protect your investment, winterize your home before the upcoming holidays to make it more enjoyable.

Inspect the heating system: Make sure it works properly and doesn’t have any carbon monoxide leaks. It is recommended to replace your air filter as well as clean your heating vents. In the end, it’s always a good idea to contact HVAC company to do maintenance for you as there are a bit more complicated things- for example fuel supply.

Pipes: Turn off any exterior faucets as they can freeze and cause pipes to burst as the ice expands. Also, if you feel like you need to, insulate any exposed piping.

Check air leaks: Test all of your doors and windows for air leaks. The easiest way to do it is holding a lighted candle near windows or doors. If the candle flickers, you have a problem. Also, if you feel like you need help, you can contact professionally trained member of home energy check-up. In addition to checking your doors and windows, his inspection will involve caulking, weather stripping, insulation levels, appliances, water heaters, heating and cooling systems.

Clean out the gutters: If there is something that prevents water from coming out, it can back up against the house; damaging the roof and siding.

Make sure your smoke and carbon monoxide detectors are working. Press and hold the test button on the detectors. It can take a few seconds to begin, but a loud, ear-piercing siren should emanate from the detectors while the button is pressed. If the sound is weak or nonexistent, replace your batteries.

It’s truly not hard to get your home ready for winter weather, especially here in the South. However, you don’t want to deal with any issues once winter knocks on your door.

Your friends at Farmers Mutual wishes you good and safe winter season!
