Improve Home Security

When you are a homeowner, protecting your family and your property is your top priority. Feeling safe is essential in your lifestyle. #FarmersMutualSC has prepared a couple of tips for you.

  • Keep valuables hidden

If your valuables are easily noticeable from the outside, it’s an additional encouragement for thieves to get inside. Rearrange your furnishings so that valuables are less visible from the door or street-side window. Make sure that your garage is always closed. Also, don’t leave your car keys visible on a shelf or anywhere where they can be easily noticed.

  • Reinforce entry points

Exterior doors need to be either metal or solid wood and at least 1 ¾ inches thick. Also, it is recommended to have your windows protected with locks or burglar-resistant glass. We suggest you have a security alarm. Professionally installed systems are generally best but there are good DYI options on the market today that can provide more affordable equipment.

  • Practice safe habits

If you are going to be away for a while, leave blinds in their usual positions, and make a plan to defer mail and other deliveries (maybe your neighbors can help). Also, keep in mind, thieves are able to duplicate keys simply by taking a picture. Allows be mindful where you leave your keys.

When you get a delivery, make sure someone picks it up immediately. Deliveries on doorsteps may be a temptation for thieves. Most delivery companies offer options to have a text message sent to your phone when a delivery is made. An additional option is to request a signature upon delivery of packages.

  • Don’t ever “hide a key”

It’s very common that people are “hiding” a key when leaving home, and it is usually in a place that is relatively easy to find and remember. Well, burglars also have that in mind. Instead, consider having a smart door lock that can be locked with a key as well as user code.

  • Avoid overly concealing your house

For burglars, high hedges may be encouraging to sneak in and hide when planning robbery.

Last but not least, make sure you have a proper home insurance policy that covers loss in case of robberies and thefts.
