Rental Car Insurance Facts
Are you booking that last-minute vacation before the summer ends? It’s always both
exciting and stressful. If you plan to rent a car while on your trip, make sure you are aware
of different insurance options.

Coverage can come from your personal auto policy, rental car counter, or from a third-party
insurer.
The challenging part may be to determine whether you already have coverage within your
own auto insurance policy or if you need to obtain one from the rental company. Coverage
from your own policy applies when you are using a rental car for personal, nonbusiness
purposes (rules may be different for business use of rental cars).
Vehicle damages
Rental company policy: LDW (loss-damage waiver) will get you off the hook for any damage
to the rental vehicle (including theft). This is a waiver that states that the rental company
won’t hold you liable for any damage incurred.
Your policy: If you have collision and comprehensive coverage on your own policy, it will
generally extend to a rental car.
Damages to others
Rental company policy: Supplemental liability protection will pay for damages you inflict on
others’ vehicles and property. You should definitely purchase this one if you don’t have auto
insurance coverage.
Your policy: Your own liability insurance will cover you when driving rental cars. You may
consider boosting your coverage if you have minimum liability coverage on your own plan.
Your injuries
Rental company policy: Personal accident insurance covers medical costs for you and other
passengers involved in an accident including ambulance transportation, medical care and
death benefits.
Your policy: If you possess personal injury protection or MedPay through your auto policy,
you don’t need to get anything else. However, if you’re interested in death benefits, get a
quote today.
Stolen property
Rental company policy: You may want to get personal effects coverage that pays for your
belongings if they’re stolen from a rental car.
Your policy: Homeowners or renters insurance policies will cover your possessions if stolen -
even if you’re away from home. Don’t forget to file a police report when filing a theft claim.
