Thunderstorm Safety Tips- National Preparedness Month
Are you the one who just ignores thunderstorm warning? Do you feel like it won’t be the one who gets hurt or has property damage?
Thunderstorms can come with severe weather conditions such as driving rain, damaging winds, and hail which can cause a catastrophe. Wonder how you can be thunderstorm ready?
First things first, make sure you are listening to the weather forecast and pay attention to warnings and watches. You can sign up for some of the warning systems (NOAA, EAS, etc.)
Make sure you know the difference!
Severe Thunderstorm Watch - Severe thunderstorms are possible in and near the watch area. Stay informed and be ready to act if a severe thunderstorm warning is issued.
Severe Thunderstorm Warning - Severe weather has been reported by spotters or indicated by radar. Warnings indicate imminent danger to life and property
Get ready on time!
If you do have trees around your home, make sure you are keeping them trimmed and removing damaged branches.
Know what items you need to bring inside, especially those that can cause damage to your property if the wind blows them around.
When you hear a warning, find yourself an indoor place quickly. Additionally, pick a safe place in your home that is away from windows, skylights, and glass doors that could be broken by strong winds or hail.
Remind yourself about first aid and how to help others in emergencies.
When a thunderstorm starts, what do you do?
Do not take a bath, shower, or use plumbing by any means. Also, avoid electronic equipment of all types. Lightning can travel through plumbing as well as through electrical systems, radio, and television reception systems.
If you are on the road, try to safely exit the roadway and park. Stay in the vehicle and turn on the emergency flashers until the heavy rain ends. Also, make sure to not park by the tree or traffic sign that can fall down and cause an accident.
Stay inside for at least 30 minutes after the last thunderclap.
