What Do Farmers Do In The Winter?

The harvest may be over, the equipment has been put away and winter has begun. So what can Farmers do with all their time over the next few weeks before spring kicks off?

Clean and Fix Equipment

After a busy season, some parts start to wear down and machines need maintenance. You can also consider putting new belts and chains on combines, tractors, and other important equipment. It’s necessary to keep machines running properly and be in good shape so you can get as much as possible and avoid problems during the busiest time of the year.

Shop New Equipment

Even though it doesn’t happen every year, if you make a good profit, some equipment needs to be replaced and upgraded on occasion. It's the perfect time of the year to get it done.

Taxes

Like many businesses at this time of the year, farmers can work to get all their paperwork for the past year together.

Review New Research and Implement Ideas

Farmers can always look to do better on the farm. Winter gives excellent time to catch up on new research, new ideas and new production techniques. As most farmers are planning now for the upcoming year, this extra time gives an opportunity to figure out what you can do differently.

Meet with Seed and Input Dealers

This is the time of the year to schedule meetings with seed dealers, input dealers, commodity partners, etc. You can make decisions about what you are going to plan, spray and any new ideas to implement. You can also consider attending farm shows- fairs where various agriculture dealers, suppliers, and companies set up shop in one place.

Relax and Vacation

Yes, farmers do need to get some relaxation and vacation time as well! This time of the year is for downtime, so farmers can take advantage of that. Farmers won’t take a vacation in the middle of planting or harvest and winter is the best for doing so.
